Monday February 12... I woke up in Barcelona for the first time and decided to walk
around the city. I walked towards the Mediterranean Sea and found a big mall there.
I found the city Aquarium there and a restaurant called Tapasbar outside the mall.
Inside the mall, they had the typical food court.
It was my first attempt at speaking Spanish, so I ordered only the easy things on
the menu (calamari). It looked a bit touristy, but had a great view of the port.
Afterwards, I walked around Barcelona to La Sagrada Familia. This building is amazing
and it's not even half done. They think it will take another 100 years to finish it,
and it is completely privately funded. It was designed by Gaudi, whose influence is
all over Barcelona. I am a pretty big fan of his work.
Then I returned to the
Aquarium and actually went in this time, because the guide book says it was a pretty
new, nice aquarium. It wasn't as good as the one in Monaco, but I enjoyed it. I was
dreading where I was going to eat dinner (some hesitancy about speaking the
language), but found that there was a restaurant in the Lonely Planet guidebook near
the hotel. I had paella, which was okay.
