Lisboa (Lisbon), Portugal

Wednesday Februrary 21...I only had one day in Lisboa and then I was taking the night train to Madrid, so I ran around as fast as possible. I went to Castelo de Sao Jorge, a castle on the hill, that has a great view of Lisboa. Then I took a tram to the Tower of Belem. The guide book lists Pasteis de Belem, a pastry store in Belem as a must. But I found a restaurant near it that was amazing. I only chose it because I understood two words on the menu posted outside that I saw as I was passing it on the tram. It was one of the most amazing lunches I had on the trip. I did go to the pastry store after lunch, which had little custard cups as their specialty. They were pretty good and I would recommend them to anybody going to Lisboa.

I went back to Lisboa and took the metro system to Parque Das Nacoes (Park of Nations), the site of the 1998 World Expo. There is a big shopping mall, a grat view of the river, and lots of interesting displays (go to Lisboa World Expo photo section to see the many different types of water fountains). The best thing about the Park was the long line of all the flags of the world. At the base of each flag was a description of the country, location, and its population in 1998.

I grabbed a quick bite at the Pizza Hut at the Park's mall and went back to the hotel to get my stuff since I was leaving that night. And before my overnight train ride to Madrid, I munched on some snacks that I had (Oreos, Pringles, Portuguese pastries, and some fruit). Pringles were the key to my survival.
